Any air that sneaks in after the flow meter is \"unmetered\" and makes the engine run lean. An old intake boot cracks between its ribs, splits at the clamp areas or goes hard and stops sealing. The symptoms are a high or hunting idle, hesitation off idle, stalling when warm, backfiring and poor fuel economy.
