When it hardens, cracks or falls apart, the strut can hit metal-to-metal on big bumps and driveway dips. That means a hard clunk from the front of the car, a sharper ride and extra load on the strut insert, upper mount and the strut tower itself. On a 45-year-old Super Beetle most original stops are crumbling, and a lot of cars have been fitted with new inserts but kept the old stop. If you are replacing struts, mounts or boots, replace both bump stops at the same time.

Installation Notes

The bump stop slides over the strut piston rod under the upper mount. The spring must be compressed or the strut removed to fit it.

Use a proper strut spring compressor and follow the workshop manual for removing the strut and upper mount.

Fit the new stop with its narrow end toward the strut body, the same way the old one came out.

Replace both sides together so the front end compresses evenly.

Check the dust boot at the same time; a torn boot lets grit onto the strut shaft.

We do not publish torque values here; use the factory workshop manual for your vehicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the JP-8276-0 fit my 1974 Super Beetle?
Yes.
