A rubber boot covers the plug to seal it. With age the boot cracks, shrinks or goes missing. Then moisture gets into the plug and the terminals corrode. The symptoms are familiar to many Vanagon owners. Brake lights, turn signals or running lights flicker or stop working on one side. A bulb glows dimly. The wrong light comes on when you brake (a ground fault). Or the light works only after you wiggle the plug. A corroded tail light plug is also a common cause of turn signals that flash fast or not at all.
