Before you blame the shifter for vague shifting, check the Bay Window shift-rod bushings, the rear shift-rod coupler and the transmission nose-cone bushing. Each one adds play. With the shifter fitted, adjust the stop plate so first, third and reverse engage cleanly, then confirm reverse is only reachable with the lockout lifted.
