What changed on a 1958–1967 Beetle
The running changes that matter
Our chassis decoder records the rear window and windshield both growing in 1958, a front anti-roll bar and dished steering wheel in 1960, 36 to 40 horsepower with full synchromesh in 1961, a real fuel gauge in 1962, a sliding metal sunroof in 1964, a large jump in glass area plus a redesigned brake system and new master cylinder in 1965, 1200cc growing to 1300cc in 1966, and then 1967: 1500cc, 43 horsepower, upright sealed-beam headlights, and 6 volts becoming 12.
1967 is the line that costs people money
The electrical split is hard. Our 6V ignition coil is cataloged for Beetles from 1949 to 1966; the 12V coil starts at 1967. The front end changes earlier — our link and king pin rebuild kit stops at 1965 — and so does the shift linkage, where the early coupler is listed for 1950 to 1964 Beetles and the late-style coupler picks up at 1965. Same body shape, three different parts bins.

- Confirm 6 volt or 12 volt on the car itself. The factory change is 1967 and conversions are everywhere.
- Link-and-king-pin or ball-joint front end: our rebuild kit covers 1946 to 1965, so 1966 and 1967 cars sit on the other side of that line.
- Shift linkage splits at 1964/1965. Our early coupler is cataloged for 1950–1964, the late-style billet coupler for 1965–1979.
- The parking brake ratchet gear changes at 1965. Our bands are 1956–1964 and 1965–1972, and both breaks are corroborated outside our own catalog.

Do 1968 Beetle parts fit a 1966?
Some do and some do not. The 1967 electrical change and the 1965 front-end and shift-linkage changes all sit between those two cars, so read the fitment list rather than assuming a shared body shape means a shared part.
Does a 1965 Beetle use link and king pin or ball joints?
