Why a Super Beetle is not a Beetle with a different badge
The front end does not interchange
Our chassis decoder records the MacPherson-strut front end arriving with the Type 1302 in 1971, along with a bigger front trunk than a standard Beetle, and the curved panoramic windshield and padded dash of the Type 1303 in 1973. The catalog reflects it: our Bilstein front strut inserts are cataloged for the Super Beetle 1973–1979 only, our adjustable tie rod set for the Super Beetle 1975–1979 only, and our ball joint listing is Super Beetle only. Torsion-beam Beetle front parts do not fit.
What does carry over
Behind the front axle, most of it. Our rear IRS shocks are cataloged for the Beetle 1968–1979 and the Super Beetle 1971–1979 on the same part. Type 1 engine internals, case studs, crankshafts and carburetors list across Beetle, Super Beetle, Bus, Ghia and Type 3. Our braided brake line kit covers the Beetle 1958–1979 and the Super Beetle 1971–1979. So: shop Beetle for the drivetrain, Super Beetle for the front end and glass.
Before you order
- Front suspension, steering and front body parts: order Super Beetle specific. Nothing from a torsion-beam Beetle applies.
- 1303 cars from 1973 have a curved windshield and a different dash. Flat-screen 1302 parts do not fit them.
- Convertibles are cataloged separately. Our carpet kits list as Super Beetle Convertible 1973–1979 and the top boot as 1977–1979.
- Engine, transaxle and rear suspension: shop the standard Beetle listings, they are the same parts.

What is the difference between a Super Beetle and a standard Beetle front end?
The Super Beetle uses a MacPherson strut front end from 1971, where the standard Beetle keeps twin torsion beams. Our Bilstein front strut inserts are cataloged for the Super Beetle 1973 to 1979 only and our adjustable tie rod set for the Super Beetle 1975 to 1979 only, so front parts do not cross over.
Do standard Beetle body panels fit a Super Beetle?
Not at the front. The Super Beetle has a longer, differently shaped front end and, from 1973, a curved windshield and its own dash. Rear and center body parts are far more likely to cross, but check the fitment list on the listing.
Are Super Beetle engine parts different?
No. Type 1 engine internals, case studs, crankshafts and carburetors in our catalog list across Beetle, Super Beetle, Bus, Ghia and Type 3 on the same part number.
