Why the Ground Strap Matters

On a classic VW (or any older vehicle), the battery ground strap carries every amp the starter draws — typically 150 to 300+ amps during cranking. When the strap is undersized, corroded, or has loose terminals, resistance climbs and the starter sees a fraction of the voltage it should. Symptoms include slow cranking, a clicking solenoid, dim dash lights when you turn the key, and gradually worsening starting in cold weather. A new 14" braided strap restores full current flow and fixes problems that get misdiagnosed as bad starters, weak batteries, or bad solenoids.

• Where does this go on a VW? On most air-cooled VWs, the battery negative terminal grounds to the body via a strap, and then a separate strap grounds the engine/transmission to the chassis.
