Washburn Windows Large: Dual Carb Access Panels for the VW Beetle (11" x 7.75")
Short answer: Washburn Windows Large (#BY01) are a weld-in pair of 11" x 7.75" carb access panels for the rear wheel wells, sized for dual-carb and big-bore engines. They fit the 1949–1979 VW Beetle and 1971–1979 Super Beetle.
Put dual carbs on a big-bore Type 1 and the engine bay runs out of room fast. Changing plugs means pulling the air cleaners and linkage first, and syncing carbs means reaching in around a hot engine. Washburn Windows Large give you an 11" x 7.75" opening on each side, through the rear wheel wells, straight to your carbs and plugs.
We laser-cut them from steel here in our shop in Orange, California. The threaded frames weld into the inner fenders and the covers bolt on with stainless button-head hardware. Open them up when it's time to tune, and bolt them shut when you're done.
Want a different cover?
This kit ships with steel covers and stainless hardware, and that's all most builds need. If you want something else under the deck lid, we cut carbon fiber covers (#BY01-CF) to this same pattern — lighter, show finish, and they bolt to these same frames. You don't have to decide today; you can add them whenever you like.
What they're for
- Syncing dual Weber IDFs, Dell'Ortos, Kadrons or EMPI HPMX carbs with the engine running
- Swapping spark plugs without pulling the air cleaners and linkage first
- Jetting changes and top-end adjustments on 1776, 1835, 1915cc and larger builds
Fitment
- VW Beetle (Type 1): Standard Beetle 1949–1979 and Super Beetle 1971–1979
- Built for: dual-carb and big-engine builds, 1776cc and up. For a stock single-carb Bug, the standard-size Washburn Windows (7.5" x 6.5") give you plenty of room.
What's in the box
- Two laser-cut steel threaded frames and two covers (left and right)
- Stainless steel button-head hardware
No separate template needed. The frame is the template: set it on the wheel well, trace it, and cut.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Do I have to cut and weld? Yes. Trace the frame on each rear wheel well, cut the opening, weld the frame in, and bolt the cover on. If you can cut and weld, you can put these in.
- Large or standard? Large (11" x 7.75") is for dual carbs and big engines. Standard (7.5" x 6.5") is for a stock single-carb engine.
- Will these fit a stock 1600 with one carb? Yes, but that's more opening than you need. The standard Windows do that job.
- Will they fit a Super Beetle? Yes. They fit both Standard and Super Beetles.
- Do they come painted? No. They ship as bare steel so you can finish them to match your build.
- Can I run carbon fiber covers instead? Yes. The carbon fiber covers are cut to this same pattern and bolt to the same frames.
- What's in the box? Two laser-cut steel threaded frames, two covers (left and right) and stainless steel button-head hardware. The frame doubles as the cutting template.
- What is the part number? Washburn's Metal #BY01.
