The Washburn's Metal shifter mounting box is a heavy-duty replacement for the factory shifter box used on VW Beetle, Bus, and other Type 1 / Type 2 applications. It uses a bearing-supported shaft and a tapered, slotted engagement cup for crisp, positive, repeatable shifter feel.

Classic VW shifters pivot at a small box on the chassis tunnel. Over time the factory bushings wear, letting the shifter develop lateral and vertical play — the famously vague feel where you stir around looking for the gate and hunt for reverse. • Will this fix my sloppy shifter? A worn factory shifter box is one of the top three causes of sloppy VW shifter feel (along with a worn shift coupler and worn shift rod bushing). Replacing the box addresses one of those three; for a complete rebuild, plan to address the coupler and bushing as well — our #CH01 Delrin shift bushing is the recommended upgrade there.
• Does it use the factory mounting location? Yes. The box mounts at the factory shifter location on the chassis, bolting or welding in place depending on your specific chassis and build.
• Can I use my existing shifter handle? Yes. It works with any standard VW shifter — factory, aftermarket, or short-throw — via the standard VW shifter shaft interface.
• What's a "torsion raise" application? A torsion raise rotates the VW front and rear torsion housings to lift the car. This changes shifter angle and location, and many torsion-raise builds need a different shifter mounting solution than stock. This box handles those geometry changes.
