Ask an expert

A worn door check rod is why your Ghia door swings too far into the fender, or won't hold itself open on an incline. The original strap wears at the pivot and loses its detent, and no amount of hinge work fixes it. This is a new replacement check rod (part 141-253B-L/R) that puts the factory door stop back where it belongs — one piece, fits either door.

Features

  • Factory-style door stop. Limits how far the door opens and holds it at its detent, exactly like the original.
  • Left or right — one part, either side. The design is symmetrical, so you only need to know how many you want, not which side.
  • Made in the USA by West Coast Metric. Tooled and stamped domestically, not an overseas reproduction.
  • Direct replacement. Bolts to the original mounting points — no drilling, no modification to the door or A-pillar.
  • Sold individually. A complete car takes two.

Fitment

Confirmed: VW Karmann Ghia (Type 14) Coupe and Convertible, 1959–1974 — left or right door.

Not confirmed: Ghias built before 1959. Some catalogs list this part from 1955, but West Coast Metric — who manufacture it — spec it from 1959 forward. If you have a pre-1959 car, contact us before ordering and we'll check it against your door.

Questions & Answers

Does this fit my 1967 Karmann Ghia?
Yes. This check rod fits every Karmann Ghia coupe and convertible from 1959 through 1974, on either door.

What's the part number?
141-253B-L/R. The OEM cross-reference is 141-837-253B.

Do I need to order a left one and a right one?
No. The same part serves either side — order two if you're doing both doors.

What does a check rod actually do?
It's the door strap that limits how far the door opens and holds it open at its stop, so the door can't swing into the fender or fall shut on a slope.

Is it made in the USA?
Yes — West Coast Metric manufactures this check rod in the USA.

How does it ship?
Standard ground or air. It's a small steel part with no hazmat or ground-only restriction.
