Porsche 914 parts, and why half of them say Type 4 on the box

The 914's flat-four is a Volkswagen Type 4 engine, and that is not trivia - it is how you find parts. Induction hardware for this car is catalogued here as "1700-2000cc Type 4 and 914," and the Weber 44 IDF kit we sell for it carries VW Bus 1972-1979 and VW Type 4 1972-1974 on the same fitment line. When a 914-badged part is hard to find, the Type 4 equivalent often is not.

Order by displacement, not by year

Piston and cylinder sets make this obvious: 93mm x 66mm is the 1800cc engine, catalogued here for 1974-1975 cars, and 94mm x 71mm is the 2000cc, catalogued for 1976. Buying top end off the model year alone is how people end up with the wrong bore. Read the engine number, or measure.

What crosses over from the 911

More than you would expect. The PMO aluminum front crossmember in this catalog is listed for 911 1968-1989, 912 1968-1969 and 914 1970-1976. Oil pressure switches and fuel tank sender gaskets share across 356, 911, 912 and 914. Our 914 fitment data runs 1969-1976 across the board, so where a listing shows a narrower band than that, the narrower band is deliberate - read it rather than assuming.
