CMI 17-4 Stainless Steel Crank Pulley Bolt & Washer | VW Type 1 (#A07 / CB 2044)
Short answer: This is a CMI Precision Machining crank pulley bolt and stepped washer in 17-4 H-900 stainless (40-44 HRC), turned with a 1/2" drive or a 1" hex, made in the USA. It fits VW Type 1 engines in the Beetle, Karmann Ghia, Thing, Bus through 1971 and Type 1-powered buggies, but not Type 4 engines.
The crank pulley bolt clamps the pulley that drives your fan belt and alternator or generator, and it lives right where road grime and moisture collect. CMI Precision Machining replaces the factory bolt and washer with a set machined from 17-4 stainless steel in the H-900 condition, hardened to 40-44 Rockwell C. The bolt has precision-cut "J" threads with a controlled root radius to resist cracking, and it can be turned with either a 1/2" drive ratchet or a 1" wrench or socket on the outside hex. The large stepped washer centers the crank pulley. Made in the USA.
This is a genuine CMI Precision Machining product — genuine CMI parts, made in the USA, with full factory support.
Vehicle Fitment
- VW Type 1 air-cooled engines: Beetle, Karmann Ghia, Thing, and Type 2 Bus with the Type 1 engine (through 1971)

Not for Type 4 engines (1972 and later Bus, 411/412, 914). Running a Type 3 engine? Contact us before ordering so we can confirm fit.
Key Features and Benefits
- 17-4 stainless, H-900: strong and corrosion resistant, so it will not rust onto the pulley.
- 40-44 RC hardness for durability and strength.
- "J" threads with a controlled root radius: the radiused thread root helps prevent cracking.
- Two ways to turn it: a 1/2" drive ratchet in the head, or a 1" wrench or socket on the external hex.
- Stepped washer: a machined step centers the crank pulley correctly.
- Heavy washer: 6.35mm thick with a 42.6mm outside diameter.
- Made in the USA by CMI Precision Machining.
