EMPI Chrome Lug Bolts — Ball Seat, 22mm Head | Air-Cooled VW
Bright chrome replacement lug bolts with the factory ball seat and a 22mm head, offered in three sizes so you can match the thread and length your wheels actually need. These are the correct seat profile for stock VW steel wheels and for aftermarket wheels machined with a radiused seat — the same geometry the car left the factory with.
Lug bolts are the one fastener on a VW that nobody notices until they matter enormously. Original bolts rust, the chrome flakes, the heads round off under a cheap lug wrench, and the seats wear until the wheel no longer centres properly. A fresh set is inexpensive insurance and, on a car with new wheels or a fresh paint job, it is the detail that finishes the corner.
Read This First — Seat Profile and Length
Two things decide whether a lug bolt is correct for your car, and neither is the year:
- Seat profile. These are ball (radiused) seat bolts. If your wheels have a 60° tapered seat — most modern aftermarket and EMPI custom wheels do — you need the taper-seat bolts (EMPI 00-9711-0 / 00-9712-0) instead. Mixing seat profiles is genuinely dangerous: the bolt cannot clamp evenly and the wheel can work loose.
- Length. Thread engagement must be sufficient without the bolt bottoming out or protruding into the brake. Adding wheel spacers means you need longer bolts. Always test-fit one corner and check clearance behind the drum or rotor before torquing all four wheels.
Choose Your Size
- M12 x 1.5, 15mm long, Set of 5: For steel wheels. The short option — use where the wheel's mounting face is thin.
- M12 x 1.5, 20mm long, Set of 5: For steel or aluminum wheels needing a little more reach.
- M14 x 1.5, 20.5mm long, Set of 4: The 14mm thread size, sold as a set of four for 4-lug applications.

Installation Notes
- Check clearance before you commit. Fit one bolt, spin the wheel, and confirm nothing touches inside the drum or caliper.
- A light anti-seize on the threads only — never on the seat. Grease on the seat falsifies your torque reading.
- Torque in a star pattern and re-check after roughly 50 miles. New bolts bed in.
- Count your bolts. A 4-lug car needs 16, a 5-lug car needs 20 — order sets accordingly.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Ball seat or taper seat — how do I tell? Look at the seat on your existing bolt and the wheel's bolt hole. A ball seat is a smooth radius; a taper seat is a straight 60° cone. They must match the wheel, and these are ball seat.
- How many sets do I need? A 4-lug car takes 16 bolts, a 5-lug car takes 20. The M12 options ship 5 per set; the M14 option ships 4 per set.
- I am running spacers — which length? Longer than stock, and verified by test-fit. For substantial spacers see the long 12mm bolts, EMPI 70-2875-0.
- Will these fit EMPI custom wheels? Usually not — most EMPI wheels use a 60° taper seat and take 00-9711-0 or 00-9712-0.
- Is chrome durable enough for a driver? Yes for normal road use. In heavy winter salt, expect chrome lug bolts to need attention sooner than plated steel.
