EMPI HD Bubble-Top Aluminum Engine Case — 94mm Bore, 8mm Studs (98-0467-B)

An 8mm-stud 94mm case is the budget-conscious way into a big-bore Type 1 — all the displacement of a 94mm build without stepping up to 10mm studs. EMPI's HD bubble-top aluminum case (98-0467-B) is an all-new casting machined for 94mm cylinders, with the original 8mm case-stud threads retained — not a used core.

Vehicle Fitment

  • VW Beetle: 1954–1977
  • VW Super Beetle: 1971–1979 — the Super Beetle did not exist before 1971
  • VW Karmann Ghia: 1956–1974
  • VW Type 3 (Squareback, Fastback, Notchback): 1961–1973 — the Type 3 runs the same Type 1 case with its own pancake cooling tin and oil-cooler layout
  • VW Bus / Transporter (Type 2): 1955–1971 only — the 1972-and-later US Bus is a Type 4 vehicle and uses a completely different case
  • VW Thing (Type 181): 1973–1974 — the only two model years the Thing was sold in the US

Confirmed: VW Type 1 94mm big-bore builds using 8mm case studs — 1914cc and 94mm stroker combinations. Not confirmed: builds requiring 10mm studs, stock 85.5mm or 90.5/92mm builds, or any Type 4 engine.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What cylinder size does it take? Machined for 94mm barrels.
  • 8mm or 10mm studs? 8mm — if you want 10mm clamping, choose the 10mm-stud case.
  • Is it drilled for full-flow? EMPI lists this one as the sand-seal 8mm-stud case, not the full-flow version — 98-0454-B is the 94mm case published as drilled and tapped for full-flow.
  • New or rebuilt? All-new casting.
  • Will it work in a 1975 Bus? No. A 1972-and-later US Bus is a Type 4 vehicle. This is a Type 1 case, correct for Buses through 1971.
  • What's the part number? EMPI 98-0467-B (UPC 707924424966).
