Innova 3568 Digital Timing Light
Short answer: A timing light that reads advance for you. Dial in the degrees, line the strobe up on the TDC notch, and the screen shows how far ahead the spark is, from 0 to 90°. That's exactly how you set a Bosch 009 or an SVDA to 28°–32° total, without marking up your pulley. The built-in tach reads 249 to 9,990 RPM, so you know you're in the 800–950 rpm window before you read the idle timing.
Most of the VW timing mistakes we see on the phone come from two things: timing a 009 to a factory idle figure that was written for a different distributor, and reading timing at the wrong RPM. The 3568 handles both. Look up your figure in the VW Tune-Up Spec Lookup, then set it with the number on the screen instead of a guess at a chalk line.
Vehicle & Engine Fitment
- Air-cooled VW Type 1, 2, 3 and 4: original vacuum distributors, Bosch 009, SVDA and most electronic distributors.
- Porsche 356, 912, 911 and 914: conventional and electronic ignition.
- Most other gasoline engines: conventional, electronic and computer-controlled systems, domestic and import.
- Power: runs off the car's battery. Check the Innova manual before using it on a 6-volt car.
Key Features & Benefits
- Direct-reading advance, 0–90°: set total advance on a 009 or SVDA without a degree pulley.

- Split-screen LCD: RPM and advance on the screen together.
- Slim rotating barrel: aims past the fan shroud at the pulley notch.

Frequently Asked Questions
- 3551, 3568 or 5568? The 3551 is strobe only. The 3568 adds advance and RPM. The 5568 also reads dwell and voltage and comes in a hard case, which makes it the one tool for a points tune-up.
- Does it read dwell? No. For dwell, use the 5568 or a dwell meter.
- How do I set a 009 with it? Plug the carb's vacuum port, run the engine above 3,000 RPM, dial the advance knob until the TDC notch lines up, and read the degrees. Turn the distributor until it reads your target, then tighten the clamp.
Installation
Tech Note: Connect the battery leads with the engine off, then clamp the pickup on the No. 1 wire (front right cylinder). Keep the leads clear of the fan belt and the generator pulley before you start the engine.
