Mutt Tools Two-Piece Feeler Gauge Set — Straight & Angled, Dual Marked
Short answer: This is the feeler gauge we put in the tune-up cart. Two holders — one straight, one angled — with blades running 0.001" to 0.040", every blade marked in both inches and millimeters. It covers the 0.006" (0.15 mm) valve setting on every air-cooled VW upright engine, the older 0.004" (0.10 mm) setting, and the 0.016" (0.40 mm) points gap.
Valve lash is the first job of every air-cooled tune-up and the one people put off. A tight valve on these engines doesn't just tick — it burns. Checking every 3,000 miles takes a cold engine, two valve cover gaskets and a gauge you trust. The straight holder does the job on an upright Type 1 with the rocker in the open; the angled holder reaches past the rocker arm when the engine is in the car and the tin is crowding you.
Vehicle & Engine Fitment
A universal tool. On our cars it covers:
- VW Type 1 upright engines (Beetle, Ghia, Bus, Thing), 1955–1979: valve clearance, points gap, spark plug gap.
- VW Type 3 and Type 4: valve clearance and plug gap.
- Porsche 356 and 912: valve clearance and points gap.
- In the shop: fan-to-cover clearance, deck height checks, and anything else that needs a known gap.
Key Features & Benefits
- Two holders in one set: straight for open access, angled for reaching around rockers and tin.
- Dual marked: inch and metric on every blade, so the 0.15 mm on the fan-shroud decal and the 0.006" in your manual are the same blade.
- Laser-etched sizes: the markings survive oil and handling.
- Protective cover: keeps the blades from kinking in the toolbox.
Technical Specifications
- Range: 0.001"–0.040"
- Markings: SAE and metric on each blade
- In the box: one straight feeler gauge, one angled feeler gauge, protective cover
- Store SKU: MT-FG-2PC
Frequently Asked Questions
- What clearance do I set on my VW? Use our VW Tune-Up Spec Lookup — pick your engine code and it gives you valve lash, points gap, timing and the rest.
- 0.004" or 0.006"? Both are real VW numbers. VW moved every upright to 0.006" (0.15 mm), which is what the fan-shroud decal says. If your engine still wears a decal, go by the decal.
- Hot or cold? Dead cold. Overnight, not an hour after a drive.
- Should I wipe the blades? Yes. They ship with a light oil film against rust — wipe it off before you measure, and put a light film back on before storage.
Installation
Tech Note: The right blade should slide through with a light drag. If the next size up also slides through, the valve is loose; if the right blade won't go in, it's tight. Tighten the lock nut while holding the adjuster, then check it again — the lash moves when the nut comes down.
