Rebuilt Brazilian VW Steering Box — Early Bay Window Worm & Peg | Type 2 Bus 1968–1972
Short answer: This is a Brazilian VW worm-and-peg steering box for 1968–1972 Type 2 Bay Window Buses (left-hand drive), rebuilt to the same standards as our German steering boxes; it bolts in with factory hardware but does not fit 1973–1979 Late Bay Buses (211415049F-RB).
This is not a German box — but it gets the exact same rebuild as our German boxes. Same machining, same new bearings and seals, same grease fill, and the same bench test to zero play on center. If your Bus wanders, has a dead spot on center, or you're chasing an inch or more of play at the wheel, a worn box is the usual culprit, and this one ships ready to bolt in.
Built on a Brazilian VW housing, no core required, in stock and ready to ship, and backed by the same one-year replacement warranty as every box we sell.
Early Bay or Late Bay? VW used a worm-and-peg box on the Bus through July 1972 (the 1972 model year). Starting with the 1973 model year (August 1972), the Late Bay switched to a different worm-and-roller box that is not interchangeable. If your Bus is a 1973–1979, this is not your box. Working on a Beetle or Ghia instead? See our Rebuilt Type 1 Steering Box.
