VW Bus / Type 2 Parts

Parts purpose-built for the VW Bus — Type 2 specific components for Transporters, Kombis, and Vanagons. From 1950 split window through bay window 1979.

Split or Bay? That one answer decides most of your parts list

The Type 2 changes model in 1968. Splits run 1950 to 1967, Bays run 1968 to 1979, and the 1968 change was structural rather than cosmetic - the Bay arrived with ball-joint front suspension and independent rear suspension as standard. 1967 is also the year the electrical system went from 6 volts to 12, the same year the Beetle did. If your Bus is a 1967, check which side of that line each part sits on before you order.

The other dates worth knowing

  • 1955 - 15 inch wheels replace 16 inch. 1964 - 14 inch replace 15 inch.
  • 1971 - front disc brakes and dual-port heads become standard. Disc spindles and backing plates for this year are their own part.
  • 1972 - the Type 4 pancake engine becomes standard with dual carburetors. Induction from here shares hardware with the Porsche 914.
  • 1975 - AFC fuel injection replaces the carburetor. 1976 - 2000cc. 1978 - hydraulic lifters.
  • 1979 - last model year of the Bay-window Bus in Germany.

Doors, hinges and the things that sag

Bus doors carry their own weight badly after sixty years. We make an oversized cargo door hinge pin that cures sag and rattle without replacing the hinge, replica heater log legs, and an inner-structure seat belt mounting bracket that suits both Split and Bay. Our Bus door hinge rebuild was written up in VW Trends - read it here.

Pin the year down first with the VW chassis decoder or the Bus M-code decoder, then go to 1950-1967 Bus parts or 1968-1979 Bus parts. Parts line (657) 438-7002, Monday to Friday 8am-5pm Pacific.
