German VW Valve Covers with TIG-Welded -8 AN Breather Bungs — Type 1 Air-Cooled (Pair) | #E21

These are original German-stamped Volkswagen valve covers, restored and modified with TIG-welded -8 AN male breather bungs and finished in semi-gloss black powder coat. Sold as a pair (left and right), they fit all VW Type 1 air-cooled engines — the standard upright flat-four used in the Beetle, early Bus, Karmann Ghia, Type 3, and Thing.

The original German covers use thicker, heavier-gauge steel than modern reproductions, so they resist the warping that causes the persistent oil leaks seen with cheap aftermarket covers. Adding -8 AN bungs lets you plumb the valve covers to a catch can — reducing crankcase pressure on high-displacement and high-compression builds and keeping your engine bay clean.

Vehicle Fitment

  • VW Beetle: 1961–1979 (all years)
  • VW Bus / Transporter: 1950–1971 (Type 1 engine only)
  • VW Karmann Ghia: 1956–1974
  • VW Type 3 (Squareback / Fastback / Notchback): 1962–1973
  • VW Thing (Type 181): 1973–1974
  • Dune buggies, sand rails, and kit cars running Type 1 engines

Will NOT fit: Type 4 engines (1972+ Bus, 411, 412, Porsche 914). Type 4 valve covers have different geometry.

Why Choose Washburn's Metal?

We start with genuine German cores, inspect each one for dents and structural integrity, and reject any that can't be brought back to spec. The result is a heavier-gauge cover that holds its shape under repeated heat cycles — the root cause of oil leaks that thinner reproductions can't solve.

Key Features & Benefits

  • German-Stamped Steel: Thicker, heavier gauge that resists warping and stops recurring oil leaks.
  • TIG-Welded -8 AN Bungs: The standard size for catch-can plumbing on high-displacement (1776cc+) and high-compression engines.
  • Durable Finish: Media-blasted, then semi-gloss black powder coated.
  • Ready to Install: Cleaned, fabricated, coated, and ready to bolt on.
  • Complete Pair: Left and right included.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Will these fit a stock engine, or do I need a high-performance build? They fit any stock or modified Type 1 engine. The breather bungs are useful on stock engines too, but they're essential on 1776cc+ builds where blow-by exceeds what the stock breather can handle.
  • Will these fit a Type 4 engine (1972+ Bus, 411, 412, Porsche 914)? No. Type 4 engines have a different valve cover design. These are Type 1 only.
  • Do I need to use both bungs? No. You can use one as a breather and cap the other, or route both to a single catch can. Most builders use both for symmetric flow.
  • What's the difference between German-stamped and reproduction covers? German covers use noticeably thicker steel and hold their shape under repeated heat cycles. Reproductions are functional but warp more easily, which is why oil leaks reappear after a few thousand miles even with a new gasket.
  • Do these come with hardware or gaskets? No. Stock VW bail clips (the spring-steel hold-downs) and gaskets are sold separately. We recommend our #E22 German cork gaskets.
  • Are they ready to install? Yes. Cleaned, fabricated, coated, and ready to bolt on.
