Bosch 6-Volt Silver Ignition Coil | 1.5 Ohm, Epoxy-Filled with Bracket

Bosch 6-volt silver ignition coil, 1.5 ohm primary resistance, epoxy-filled, supplied with a factory-style mounting bracket. The correct coil for original 6-volt air-cooled VWs and other vintage European vehicles still running their factory 6V electrical systems. Part #00-9408-B.

VW Beetles were 6-volt from 1949 through the 1966 model year before switching to 12-volt for 1967. Running a 12V coil on a 6V system produces weak spark and unreliable starting, while a 6V coil on a 12V system burns out the coil and points quickly — match the coil voltage to the vehicle's electrical system.

Vehicle Fitment

  • VW Beetle: 1949–1966 (factory 6V)
  • VW Bus / Transporter: 1950–1966 (factory 6V)
  • VW Karmann Ghia: 1956–1966 (factory 6V)
  • VW Type 3: 1962–1966 (factory 6V)
  • Vintage European: Porsche 356, BMW, Mercedes and others running 6V points ignition
  • Will NOT work for: 12-volt electrical systems (use a 12V coil). 1967 and later VWs were 12V from the factory.

Why Choose Bosch?

Bosch is the German OE supplier that equipped these cars from the factory, so this Silver coil delivers correct 6V spark output and a factory appearance for an original-spec restoration.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is my car 6V or 12V? 1966 and earlier VWs were 6V from the factory; 1967 and later were 12V. Many early cars have been converted — check the battery and generator (6V generators are physically smaller than 12V alternators).
  • Why epoxy-filled instead of oil-filled? Epoxy-filled coils can be mounted in any orientation because there's no liquid to migrate. This Bosch Silver replaces both epoxy and oil-filled styles and is the more flexible choice.
  • Will this work with Pertronix or electronic ignition? Pertronix makes 6V versions of some Ignitor modules — check your unit's specs. A 1.5 ohm coil is generally compatible with most 6V electronic ignition modules.
  • Is the bracket the original factory style? Yes — the included bracket matches the factory Bosch coil mounting pattern used on air-cooled VWs.
  • Should I convert to 12V instead? That's a separate decision. 12V conversion gives brighter headlights and easier starting but requires replacing the generator, regulator, coil, lights, and any 6V accessories. For a numbers-correct restoration, keep it 6V.
