EMPI 75-Amp 12V Alternator — Chrome, Internal Regulator, All-New | Air-Cooled VW Type 1 (00-9453-7)
A 12-volt, 75-amp alternator in a polished chrome housing, built for air-cooled VW Type 1 engines. This is the charging upgrade for cars that have outgrown a generator — or outgrown a 55-amp alternator. It is manufactured entirely from new components: no rebuilt cores, no salvaged internals, no reman gamble. This is the same alternator EMPI supplies in its popular 00-9451-0 conversion kit, sold here as a standalone unit.
The factory VW generator put out roughly 30 amps and struggled to charge at idle. That was fine for sealed-beam headlights and a point ignition. It is not fine for halogen or LED lighting, an electric fuel pump, an electronic ignition, an auxiliary cooling fan, a stereo, or any combination of the above. At 75 amps this unit delivers roughly two and a half times stock generator output and produces genuinely useful current at idle — so the battery charges sitting at a light, not just at 3,000 RPM.
Vehicle Fitment
- VW Beetle & Super Beetle: 1960–1979 (12V systems, or 6V cars converted to 12V)
- VW Karmann Ghia: 1960–1974
- VW Bus / Transporter (Type 2): 1960–1971, upright Type 1 engine
- VW Thing (Type 181): 1973–1974
- Dune buggy, Baja, sandrail & kit car: any Type 1-based build
Will NOT fit: 6-volt systems that have not been converted to 12V, Type 3 pancake engines (see the Type 3 Smallternator kit instead), or Type 4 engines — the mounting and pulley geometry differ.
Key Features & Benefits
- 75-amp output: Roughly 2.5× a stock 30-amp generator, with real charging current at idle.
- Internal voltage regulator: The external firewall regulator box comes out entirely. Simple two-wire hookup.
- All-new construction: No rebuilt cores. Reman alternators are a leading cause of repeat charging failures — this one is new throughout.
- Chrome housing: A finished, show-ready look for a chromed or polished engine bay.
- Proven platform: The same unit EMPI ships inside its 00-9451-0 alternator conversion kit.

Installation Notes
- Alternator stand required: The alternator end housing is larger than a generator's. You will need an alternator stand, or the existing generator stand trimmed to clear it.
- Use a real indicator bulb: The charging circuit needs a standard incandescent indicator light to excite the field. An LED will not reliably do this and the alternator may not charge.
- Remove the old regulator: With an internally regulated alternator, the external voltage regulator and its wiring come out of the circuit entirely.
- Check belt alignment: Verify the alternator pulley is square to the crank pulley before final tightening — misalignment is the fastest way to eat a fan belt.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Is this a new alternator or a rebuilt one? New. EMPI builds it from all-new components — no rebuilt cores and no salvaged parts are used.
- Will it bolt straight in where my generator is? Not without a stand. The alternator's end housing is larger than a generator's, so you need an alternator stand or must trim the existing generator stand to clear it. The pulley and fan belt stay in roughly the same plane.
- How is it wired? Two wires: one to the starter/battery and one to the charging indicator light on the dash. The external voltage regulator is removed entirely because this unit regulates internally.
- Can I use an LED for the charging light? No. The alternator needs a conventional incandescent indicator bulb to excite properly. An LED charge light is a common cause of a "dead" new alternator.
- Do I need 75 amps, or is 55 enough? 55 amps covers a stock-plus car with a few upgrades. Choose 75 if you are running an electric fuel pump, auxiliary fan, high-output ignition, upgraded lighting, or audio — or several of those together.
- What is the difference between this and 00-9453-0? Finish. The -7 suffix is the chrome unit; EMPI uses different suffixes across the 9453 family for finish variations. The electrical guts are the same 75-amp internally regulated unit.
- Is this a genuine EMPI part? Yes — Washburn's Metal is an authorized EMPI dealer, so this is a new genuine EMPI part, not a copy.
