EMPI Accelerator Cable — VW Beetle & Karmann Ghia
Stock-replacement accelerator (throttle) cable, approximately 2627 mm. VW reference 111-721-555E. High-strength steel, direct fit.
A throttle cable is a wear item that almost nobody replaces until it strands them. The wire frays where it turns at the pedal and inside the guide tube, and the failure mode is either a sticking pedal — genuinely dangerous — or a snap that leaves you idling on the shoulder. A fraying cable feels notchy or gritty long before it goes, so if the pedal has developed a texture it did not used to have, this is why.
Cheap insurance, and a fifteen-minute job with the fan shroud accessible.
Vehicle Fitment

Frequently Asked Questions
- How do I know mine needs replacing? A gritty or notchy pedal, or visible fraying at either end. Do not wait for it to snap.
- Does it include the guide tube or the bowden tube? No — cable only.
- Should I lubricate it? A light cable lube on installation helps, but do not pack the tube with grease — it collects grit and does the opposite of what you want.
- Is there a heavier-duty option? Yes — the King stainless heim-joint cable (C01) and the Topline MaXX 1/8" stainless cable (C09) are both stainless upgrades over this stock-spec steel cable.
Pick the Right Throttle Cable
- Beetle, Ghia & Type 1 — King stainless throttle cable (C01)
- Meyers Manx / shortened buggy chassis — King shortened throttle cable (C03)
- VW Bus 1950–1979 — King stainless Bus throttle cable (C05)
- Topline MaXX 9 ft universal-length stainless accelerator cable (C09)
- Budget stock-replacement EMPI accelerator cable (98-7501-B)
Installation Tips
- Disconnect at the carburetor, then pull the old cable out from the pedal end.
- Inspect the engine-compartment guide tube — a kinked or dry tube will wear out a new cable quickly.
- With the pedal on the floor, set the carburetor to wide-open throttle and lock the barrel nut; confirm it returns to idle.
