EMPI Heater Cable — VW Beetle & Karmann Ghia 1956–1963½

Stock replacement heater cable, approximately 3670 mm, for 1956 to mid-1963 Beetles and Karmann Ghias. VW reference 111-711-629B.

The heater cables run the full length of the tunnel from the levers to the heat exchanger flaps. They are steel, they live in a damp tunnel, and after decades they seize or snap — usually with the flaps stuck shut, which is why so many old Beetles are reputed to have no heat. Nine times out of ten the heat exchangers are fine and the cables are the problem.

Replace both sides while the tunnel is open. Doing one and leaving the other means doing the job twice.

Vehicle Fitment

  • VW Beetle: 1956 to mid-1963
  • VW Karmann Ghia: 1956 to mid-1963

Later cars use different lengths: 1965–72 Beetles and 1971–72 Super Beetles take 98-7058-B. There is a mid-1963 split — call the shop at (657) 438-7002 with your chassis number if your car is near it.

Key Features & Benefits

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is this one cable or a pair? One. A car needs two — order accordingly.
  • My heat does not work. Is this the problem? Very often. Check whether the flaps at the heat exchangers actually move when you work the levers; if they do not, it is the cables.
  • Do I need to drop the engine? No, but access to the heat exchanger ends is much easier with the engine out or the car on a lift.
