King Performance KING NUT, Billet Clutch Adjustment Wing Nut
Setting clutch free play on an air-cooled VW means reaching under the car to the adjuster on the end of the clutch cable, usually with dirty hands and not much room. The stock wing nut is small, grabs only a short length of thread and has sharp edges that bite your fingers. The KING NUT is King Performance's answer: a precision-machined billet adjusting knob, made in the U.S.A., that grips nearly twice as much thread and is shaped to be turned comfortably by hand.
Fitment
- Air-cooled VW with a cable-operated clutch adjusted by a wing nut on the clutch cable at the transaxle lever
- VW Beetle, Super Beetle, Karmann Ghia and Thing; Type 1-based dune buggies, Baja Bugs and sand rails
- King designed it to clear the motor mount bolt, so nothing needs to come off to service or adjust the clutch
- Bus and Type 3 owners: King does not list fitment for those models. Ask us before ordering and we will confirm
Key Features
- Machined from 7075-T651 billet aluminum, black anodized
- 19mm of thread engagement, versus about 10mm on a standard adjuster, so the load is spread over more threads
- 2.5mm radius on every edge for a comfortable grip
- No sharp edges or chamfers to cut your fingers
- Zero interference with the motor mount bolt
- Made in the U.S.A.

Installation and Adjustment
Back the old wing nut off the threaded end of the clutch cable and thread the KING NUT on in its place. Turn it by hand until the clutch pedal has the free play your service manual specifies before the clutch starts to disengage, then road-test. A new or replacement cable seats in over the first few hundred miles, so re-check free play after the first drive or two. Never adjust to zero free play: a clutch with no free play will slip and burn the throw-out bearing.
KING NUT or Our T10-3 Adjuster?
Our Cable Refresh Bundles ship with the 3-prong T10-3 clutch adjusting knob. The KING NUT is King's own premium alternative: 7075-T651 billet, 19mm of thread engagement and fully radiused edges. Choose the T10-3 for a proven value upgrade, or the KING NUT if you want King's heavy-duty design. Pair it with a King heavy-duty stainless clutch cable (C02) or the King shortened Manx clutch cable (C04).
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the KING NUT replace?
The wing nut adjuster on the end of the clutch cable at the transaxle clutch lever, which sets clutch pedal free play.
Why does thread engagement matter?
The KING NUT engages 19mm of thread instead of roughly 10mm on a standard adjuster, spreading the clutch cable load across more threads for a more secure adjustment.
Do I need to remove the motor mount bolt to fit or adjust it?
No. King designed it with zero interference with the motor mount bolt.
What is it made of?
7075-T651 billet aluminum with a black anodized finish, machined in the U.S.A.
Does it need tools?
No. The 2.5mm radiused edges are shaped for hand adjustment.
How is it different from the T10-3 knob in your cable bundles?
Both adjust by hand. The KING NUT is King Performance's premium version in 7075-T651 with 19mm thread engagement and radiused edges; the T10-3 is our value option.
