What's in the box Bosch resistor rotor 98-9821-B + 4 Bosch WR8AC plugs 98-9932-B + #E22 German cork valve cover gaskets (pair) + EMPI oil-change gasket kit 00-9909-B + #E15 inline fuel filter
Fits Carbureted VW Type 1 upright engines running electronic ignition with a Bosch-style cap and rotor: Pertronix Ignitor conversions and most electronic distributors.
Built by Washburn's Metal, Orange, California

No points to change. Still a tune-up to do.

Electronic ignition takes points and condenser off the list, but the valves still need setting every 3,000 miles, the plugs still wear, and the oil still needs changing. This kit is everything else from our VW Tune-Up Spec Lookup, for 5% less than buying the parts one at a time.

Fitment

  • VW Type 1 upright engines, 1961–1979, with electronic ignition inside a Bosch 009 or 009-style distributor (Pertronix Ignitor and similar)
  • Dune buggies, sand rails and kit cars running a Type 1

Check the rotor: the rotor in this kit is the Bosch 04 004 for a 009 body. If your electronic conversion sits in a factory 1969–79 vacuum distributor, that body takes the 04 033 rotor instead; a 1965–68 body takes the 04 006. Some billet electronic distributors (EMPI HEI, Pertronix Flame-Thrower) use their own cap and rotor; call us and we'll match one.

Not for: fuel-injected Beetles (no carburetor fuel filter), Type 3, or Type 4 Bus engines.

How to do the job

  1. Engine dead cold: adjust the valves to 0.006" (0.15 mm) and fit the new cork gaskets.
  2. Fit the rotor and the gapped plugs.
  3. Drain the oil, clean the screen, and reassemble with the new gaskets and washers. Refill with 2.5 L (2.64 qt).
  4. Warm it up and check the timing to your distributor's figure. Most time like a 009: 28°–32° BTDC total.

Questions we get

Why no points or condenser? Electronic ignition replaces both. There's no dwell to set either.

Is oil included? No. You need three quarts; our PennGrade 1 high-zinc oil is sold by the quart.
