Fitment
- VW Beetle and Karmann Ghia, mid-1964 to 1967
- VW Bus, 1964–1967
Not for: 1968-and-later distributors (use the 1968–69 kit), 40hp distributors 0 231 139 002 / 005 (use the 1961–64 kit), or engines converted to a Bosch 009.
How to do the job
- Engine dead cold: adjust the valves to 0.006" (0.15 mm), or to the figure on your fan-shroud decal, and fit the new cork gaskets.
- Fit the points and condenser, gap the points to 0.016", and check dwell.
- Fit the rotor and the gapped plugs.
- Drain the oil, clean the screen, and reassemble with the new gaskets and washers. Refill with 2.5 L (2.64 qt).
- Warm it up and set the timing to 7.5° BTDC, static or by strobe at 800–950 rpm.
Every number for your exact engine code and distributor is in the VW Tune-Up Spec Lookup.
Questions we get
The condenser says Type 3 on its own listing. Will it fit? Yes. Bosch 02 069 replaced the original 02 007 for the 1965–69 Type 1 as well. The wire is a little longer than you need.
Do I need a new cap? Only if yours is cracked or carbon-tracked. The 1965–68 cap is Bosch 03 001, listed separately.
Is oil included? No. Pick the grade for your climate; you need three quarts of our PennGrade 1 high-zinc oil.
