Everything for a points tune-up on a 1968–69 VW, in one box
1968 and 1969 share points and condenser but not the rotor: 1968 uses the 04 006, and 1969 moved to the 04 033 with the new cap. Pick your year and the kit comes with the right one. It's the parts list our VW Tune-Up Spec Lookup gives for these engines, in one box for 5% less than buying the parts one at a time. Add oil for your climate and you have the whole job.

Fitment
- VW Beetle and Karmann Ghia, 1968–1969, manual transmission
- VW Bus with a Type 1 engine, 1968–1969
Not for: Automatic Stick Shift cars (they use 01 011 points and an 02 021 condenser; call us), engines converted to a Bosch 009, or electronic ignition.
How to do the job
- Engine dead cold: adjust the valves to 0.006" (0.15 mm), or to the figure on your fan-shroud decal, and fit the new cork gaskets.
- Fit the points and condenser, gap the points to 0.016", and check dwell.
- Fit the rotor and the gapped plugs.
- Drain the oil, clean the screen, and reassemble with the new gaskets and washers. Refill with 2.5 L (2.64 qt).
- Warm it up and set the timing to TDC (0°) by strobe at 800–950 rpm with the vacuum hose disconnected and plugged.
Every number for your exact engine code and distributor is in the VW Tune-Up Spec Lookup.
Questions we get
Which year should I pick? Go by the distributor cap: a 1968 car has the Bosch 03 001 cap, a 1969 car the 03 010. If yours has been swapped, match the rotor to the cap.
I have an Automatic Stick Shift. This kit is for manual-transmission cars. Call us and we will put together the 01 011 points and 02 021 condenser.
Is oil included? No. Pick the grade for your climate; you need three quarts of our PennGrade 1 high-zinc oil.
