Fitment
- VW Beetle, Super Beetle, Karmann Ghia and Thing, 1974, carbureted
- Carbureted rest-of-world and Mexican Type 1 Beetles, 1975–1979
Not for: 1975–79 US fuel-injected Beetles (see the fuel-injected tune-up kit), engines converted to a Bosch 009, electronic ignition, or Type 4 Bus engines. On a 1973 car, use the 1970–73 kit; the condenser is different.
How to do the job
- Engine dead cold: adjust the valves to 0.006" (0.15 mm), or to the figure on your fan-shroud decal, and fit the new cork gaskets.
- Fit the points and condenser, gap the points to 0.016", and check dwell.
- Fit the rotor and the gapped plugs.
- Drain the oil, clean the screen, and reassemble with the new gaskets and washers. Refill with 2.5 L (2.64 qt).
- Warm it up and set the timing for your distributor. A 1974 two-hose distributor is 5° after TDC with both hoses on; a one-hose SVDA is 7.5° before TDC with the hose plugged.
Every number for your exact engine code and distributor is in the VW Tune-Up Spec Lookup.
Questions we get
Two-hose or one-hose distributor — does it matter for this kit? The points, condenser and rotor fit both 1974 distributors. Only the timing figure changes.
Is oil included? No. Pick the grade for your climate; you need three quarts of our PennGrade 1 high-zinc oil.
