The tune-up for the fuel-injected Beetle, in one box

The 1975–79 fuel-injected Beetle still has points, still needs its valves set every 3,000 miles, and still takes the same oil change as every other upright. What it doesn't have is a carburetor fuel filter, so this kit leaves that out. It's the parts list our VW Tune-Up Spec Lookup gives for these engines, in one box for 5% less than buying the parts one at a time. Add oil for your climate and you have the whole job.

Fitment

  • VW Beetle (Sedan), fuel injected, 1975–1977
  • VW Super Beetle and Convertible, fuel injected, 1975–1979

Not for: carbureted Beetles (see the 1974–79 carbureted kit), engines converted to a Bosch 009 or electronic ignition, or the fuel-injected Type 4 Bus.

How to do the job

  1. Engine dead cold: adjust the valves to 0.006" (0.15 mm), or to the figure on your fan-shroud decal, and fit the new cork gaskets.
  2. Fit the points and condenser, gap the points to 0.016", and check dwell.
  3. Fit the rotor and the gapped plugs.
  4. Drain the oil, clean the screen, and reassemble with the new gaskets and washers. Refill with 2.5 L (2.64 qt).
  5. Warm it up and set the timing to 5° after TDC at idle with the vacuum hoses connected. Don't borrow the 7.5° BTDC figure from the fuel-injected Bus; that's a Type 4.

Every number for your exact engine code and distributor is in the VW Tune-Up Spec Lookup.

Questions we get

Why no fuel filter? The injection system uses a different, high-pressure filter. The clear inline filter in our carbureted kits is not for injection pressure.

Is oil included? No. Pick the grade for your climate; you need three quarts of our PennGrade 1 high-zinc oil.
