Fitment
| Years | Vehicle | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1960–1974 | VW Karmann Ghia | Single thrust (EMPI) |
| 1966–1973 | VW Type 3 Fastback / Squareback | Single thrust (EMPI) |
| 1973–1974 | VW Thing | Per EMPI (list truncated) |
| 1961–1979 | VW Beetle / Super Beetle, Bus to 1971, Type 1 1300–1600 | Same single-thrust cam bearing (111 198 541) |
| All | Line-bored case | Does not fit — needs oversize cam bearings |
| All | Case built for double-thrust bearings | Use a double-thrust set instead |
| 1972–1979 | Bus Type 4 engine | Does not fit |
Single-thrust bearings were original on most Type 1 cases. Many rebuilders use double-thrust sets on later cases. Look at your old bearings: a single thrust flange on one side means this set.

Why It Matters
The cam on a Type 1 runs directly in these bearing shells in the case, and the thrust flange controls cam end play. Worn cam bearings drop oil pressure to the lifters and rockers, and too much end play upsets cam timing and gear mesh.
Cam bearings are a replace-every-rebuild item. JP Group is a Danish parts supplier that packs engine internals from the big German makers (MAHLE, KS / Kolbenschmidt) for classic VW engines, sold in the US through EMPI. Washburn's Metal in Orange, CA lists each one with its VW OE number and JP reference so you can match it to your engine.
Installation Notes
- Clean the case saddles and oil passages before fitting.
- Line up the bearing oil holes with the case oil feed holes and seat the locating tangs.
- Check cam end play at the thrust bearing after fitting the cam.
- Use assembly lube on the bearing faces and on the cam lobes.
