Not Included

- Crankcase breather hose and preheat hose (this cleaner has no preheat or breather connection)
- Replacement foam elements
Why It Matters
The stock oil-bath air cleaner on a Beetle is big, heavy and often cracked, rusted or missing on older cars. Many owners replace it with a compact chrome cleaner to clean up the engine bay and make it easier to reach the carburetor. A torn or missing filter lets dirt and grit straight into the engine, which wears the cylinders, pistons and valve guides fast. A clean foam element keeps the dirt out and can be washed and re-oiled at each service. Note that dropping the stock air cleaner also removes the warm-air preheat and the crankcase breather connection, so the car may run a little rougher when cold, and you should route the breather hose properly.
Installation Notes
- Remove the stock air cleaner and plug or reroute the preheat hose.
- Route the crankcase breather to a proper catch can or breather filter; do not leave it open near the exhaust.
- Fit the new air cleaner squarely on the carburetor neck and tighten the clamp or wing nut evenly.
- Check that the throttle linkage and choke move freely with the cleaner fitted.
- A smaller cleaner can change mixture slightly; check idle and mixture after fitting.
