What's Included
- One set of ignition points.
Not Included
- Condenser, rotor, distributor cap or feeler gauge.
Why It Matters
Points are the mechanical switch inside the distributor that fires the coil. Their contacts burn and pit, and the rubbing block wears, so the gap and dwell drift. The engine then starts poorly, misfires, idles rough and loses power. Quality points are worth it: cheap points often have soft rubbing blocks that wear in a few hundred miles. Doduco was an original-equipment supplier to German makers.
JP Group is a Danish supplier that has specialised in classic Volkswagen and Porsche parts for decades, and EMPI distributes the range in the USA. Their parts are made to match the original design, so they fit without the guesswork that comes with generic replacements.
Installation Notes
- Remove the distributor cap and rotor. Note how the old points are wired.
- Remove the screw and the wire, lift out the old points and wipe the breaker plate.
- Fit the new points and put a small dab of cam grease on the distributor cam.
- Set the gap to the factory spec (commonly 0.016 in / 0.4 mm on Type 1), then set dwell and timing with a dwell meter and timing light.
- Recheck the gap after the first few hundred miles as the rubbing block beds in.
- Follow the factory workshop manual (Bentley or VW) for your model. If in doubt, have a qualified mechanic fit the part.
