A worn mechanical pump, vapor lock on a hot day, or a buggy with the tank nowhere near the engine all lead to the same fix: a low-pressure electric pump that pushes fuel from the tank. EMPI 41-2604-7 is a 12V inline pump with a filter that delivers 15 GPH at 2.0–4.0 PSI.

The pressure is what makes it suit a carburetor. At 2–4 PSI it won't push fuel past the float needle, so you don't need a regulator on a stock-style carburetor. It has 5/16 in. ports for standard VW fuel hose and comes with the filter and mounting hardware.

Installation Notes

• Mount the pump low and close to the tank, on the chassis and not the engine, so it pushes fuel instead of pulling it. Mount it away from exhaust heat.
• Put the filter before the pump inlet, so debris from an old tank doesn't reach the pump.
• Fuse it and wire it through an oil-pressure safety switch or an inertia switch, so the pump stops if the engine stalls or you crash.
• Use fuel-rated 5/16 in. hose and real fuel-injection clamps. Don't use worm clamps on old, hard hose.
• If you are removing the mechanical pump, fit a block-off plate on the case.
