EMPI Chromoly Gland Nut & Washer Kit — 36mm (00-4029-0)

The gland nut is the one fastener holding the flywheel to the crank on a Type 1 VW engine. If it loses its torque, the dowels wallow out and the crank is scrap. EMPI 00-4029-0 is a 36 mm chromoly gland nut with its heavy-duty washer, a stronger replacement for the stock nut that costs far less than a flywheel and crank. Put it on your list for every clutch job or engine build.

Fitment

This kit fits VW Type 1 (upright-fan) engines with a gland-nut crankshaft, from 08/60 on, in any chassis they were fitted to.

• CONFIRMED (EMPI price file): Type 1 08/60–12/86, Type 3 04/61–07/73, Karmann Ghia 08/60–07/73, Transporter T1 08/60–07/67, 181 Thing 09/69–02/79, Buggy 08/63–07/71 and Baja 08/68–12/86.
• CONFIRMED only with a Type 1 engine: Transporter T2 08/67–07/79 and T3 05/79–12/82. US buses from 1972 and all air-cooled Vanagons have the Type 4 engine, which bolts its flywheel on with five bolts and uses no gland nut.
• NOT CONFIRMED: pre-08/60 36 hp engines, flanged or 8-dowel performance cranks (check your crank), and Porsche 356/912.

Installation Notes

• Lock the flywheel with a flywheel lock or a bar across two pressure-plate bolts. Do not rely on the starter ring.
• Check the dowels and the crank flange. If the flywheel rocks on its dowels, fix that first, because a new nut will not save it.
• Set crank end play with the flywheel shims (0.003–0.005 in is the usual target) before final torque.
• Put a light coat of oil on the threads and under the washer, then torque to 217 ft-lb with a 36 mm socket and a torque multiplier or long bar.
• Replace the felt ring and inspect the needle bearing in the nut before fitting the transaxle.
