A torn CV boot on a Bus throws grease across the back of the transaxle and lets grit into the joint. Replace it before the joint starts clicking and you save the joint. EMPI 86-1086-D is the complete boot kit for one Type 2 CV joint: a neoprene boot, a pack of moly grease and the boot hardware.

It is the kit for the 1968–1979 Bus, the Vanagon and the Thing, and it comes in EMPI's retail box with everything but the CV bolts.

• Dealer-listed (NOT CONFIRMED by EMPI): Other dealers list the equivalent 251 598 201 kit for Type 4 (411/412) 1971–1974 and Vanagon air-cooled, 2.1L, Syncro, Diesel and 1.9L.
• NOT CONFIRMED: Vanagon Syncro and any axle with non-stock CV joints; dune buggies and sand rails with Type 2 CV conversions (fits only if the joints are stock-size Type 2). Type 1 IRS Beetles use a smaller boot: see EMPI 86-1084-D.

Installation Notes

• Support the Bus safely, pull the six CV bolts on each end and drop the axle. Mark the joints so they go back the way they came off.
• Clean the joint completely and check it. If the balls are pitted or the grease is full of grit, replace the joint, not just the boot.
• Work the moly grease into the joint from both sides until it is full, then fit the new boot and its hardware.
• Clean the CV bolt threads and the flange faces. Use new lock washers or bolts where your manual calls for them, and torque the bolts to spec in a cross pattern.
• A full reseal is four joints and four kits. Do them all at once while the axles are out.

• Does this fit a 1972 VW Bus? Yes. EMPI lists it for the VW Transporter T2 from 08/67 to 07/79, which covers every 1968–1979 Bus with IRS CV joints.
• Does it fit a Vanagon? Yes for the standard Vanagon: EMPI lists the VW Transporter T3 from 05/79 to 07/92. Syncro and aftermarket-axle Vanagons are not confirmed, so check your joints first.
