Doghouse Cooling Bundle — EMPI Super Shroud + Super Kooler + Welded Race Fan | VW Type 1 1971–1979

The three parts that actually control cylinder head temperature, bought together and priced together. Shroud, oil cooler and fan are one system — upgrade one and you get a fraction of the benefit. Upgrade all three and EMPI's own testing puts the oil leaving the cooler 86% colder than a stock setup. This is the doghouse bundle — 1971 and later. Open your engine lid: if there's a rectangular oil cooler box hanging off the outside of the fan shroud on the driver's side, you have a doghouse and this is your kit. Choose Your Shroud: Heat Delete or With Heater

Both options are the same price and contain the same cooler and fan. The only difference is the shroud:

• Heat Delete (00-8755-0): no heater duct outlets. For buggies, sand cars, race builds and anyone who has pulled the heater boxes.
• With Heater (00-8678-0): heater duct outlets included, so your heater boxes, defrost and cabin heat keep working.

• EMPI Super Shroud, Doghouse (00-8755-0 or 00-8678-0) — $225 value. CFD-designed internal fins that correct the classic imbalance where cylinders 1 and 2 get the air and 3 and 4 run hot. Porsche 356-inspired velocity stack inlet, 3D-scanned fitment, extended cooling tips, semi-gloss black. Accepts a stock 28–30mm fan or a 37mm high-output fan.
• EMPI Super Kooler Oil Cooler, Doghouse (98-1189-B) — $450 value. Built for EMPI by CSF Radiators. Bar-and-plate core, roughly 10% more cooling volume than the OE tube-and-fin in the same footprint. Cerakote ceramic thermal coating, billet CNC top, pressure tested to 120 psi, built-in M10 x 1.0 sensor bung. Ships complete with the "Hoover bit" air tin and Elring seals.
• EMPI Welded Race Cooling Fan, 36.9mm (98-2006-B) — $93.99 value. 56 welds, 28 per side in an alternating pattern, statically balanced after welding. A stock fan is riveted, and at sustained high RPM those rivets work loose. This one can't. Bulk-packed — identical fan to the retail-boxed 98-2006-0.

Why These Three Together

EMPI's published figures for the Super Kooler are 47% colder at the cooler outlet than the OE unit, and 86% colder when it's paired with the Super Shroud. That second number is the whole argument for this bundle: the cooler can only shed the heat that the shroud and fan push through it. Add the welded race fan and the air side of the system is built to hold up at the RPM a built motor actually sees.

Worth saying plainly: those are outlet temperatures, not sump temperatures. Your sump temp still depends on your tin, your timing, your jetting and how hard you drive it. But the direction is right and the hardware is honest.

Fit the Hoover bit. It's the small piece of tin that seals the gap between the cooler and the shroud, and its whole job is to stop air taking the easy path around the cooler. Leave it out and the fan pushes air past an expensive part instead of through it. It's in the box. Fit it.

Vehicle Fitment

Fits 1300cc–1600cc Type 1 engines running a doghouse shroud, single-port or dual-port, stock through high-displacement. The welded race fan is the late wide-style fan, which sets the year range:

• VW Beetle (Standard): 1971–1977
• VW Super Beetle: 1971–1979
• VW Karmann Ghia: 1971–1974
• VW Bus (Type 2): 1971, Type 1 / doghouse engine only
• VW Thing (Type 181): 1973–1974
• Dune buggy / sand rail / Baja: any doghouse Type 1 build
• Engine cases: fits both OEM and "bubbletop" cases without modification

Doghouse shrouds only. None of this will seal or fit on a pre-1971 upright engine — for those, see the upright Super Kooler (98-1186-B), the upright Super Shroud (00-8679-0 no heat / 00-8684-0 with heat) and the early 30.7mm fan (98-2003-B). Type 3 pancake engines use a different fan entirely.

What Else You May Need

The fan is supplied without hardware. Most installs also want the fan hub hardware kit (EMPI 98-4071-B) and the fan shroud screw kit (EMPI 00-9524-0). Fan-to-hub shims set blade clearance inside the shroud.

Frequently Asked Questions

• How do I know I have a doghouse? Open the engine lid. A rectangular oil cooler box on the outside of the shroud, driver's side, means doghouse — 1971 and later. A cooler standing up inside the shroud means upright — 1970 and earlier, and this bundle won't fit.
• How much do I save? $38.45. The three parts are $225 + $450 + $93.99 = $768.99 separately; the bundle is $730.54, a straight 5% off.
• Which shroud option do I want? Heat Delete (00-8755-0) if you've removed the heater boxes or are building a buggy or race car. With Heater (00-8678-0) if you want cabin heat and defrost. Same price either way.
• Do I need the race fan on a stock 1600? Not usually — a healthy stock fan is fine at stock RPM. The welded fan earns its keep above roughly 5,500 RPM, on strokers and big-bore dual ports, and on any engine where a fan failure inside the shroud would be expensive.
• Is hardware included? The cooler comes with its Hoover bit air tin and Elring seals. The fan is sold without hardware — hub kits, shims and shroud screws are separate parts.
• Will this fit a bubbletop case? Yes. EMPI 3D-scanned multiple cases and the shroud fits both OEM and bubbletop without modification.
• Does it fit a 36HP engine from the 1950s? No. These shrouds are sold as "36HP style," which describes the early shape, not the fitment. This is a doghouse kit for 1971-and-later Type 1 engines.
• Can I buy the parts individually? Yes — each is its own listing. The bundle just prices the three together at 5% off.
