A ticking exhaust at cold start, soot streaks around the head flange, and a heater that smells like exhaust all point to one thing: a blown port gasket. Never reuse the old ones. EMPI 00-3391-0 is a set of four 1-1/2 in. I.D. exhaust port gaskets for 1200–1600cc upright VW engines. That is one for every port and a leak-free seal between the head and the heat exchanger or header.

• CONFIRMED (EMPI): VW Beetle 1948–1979 (Type 1 through 12/1986 in EMPI's list), Karmann Ghia 1955–1974, Type 1 Bus 1950–1967 and Type 2 Bus with the Type 1 engine 1968–1971, dune buggies from 08/1963 and Baja Bugs from 08/1968.
• CONFIRMED (dealer-listed and same Type 1 engine): Super Beetle 1971–1979 and Thing 1973–1974. Type 3 1962–1973 is dealer-listed by two dealers.

Installation Notes

• Scrape the head's port face and the flange clean and flat. A step or old gasket residue is what makes a new gasket blow out.
• Check the exhaust studs. Replace any stripped or necked stud now, because it will not hold torque.
• Snug the nuts evenly in stages so the flange pulls down square, then retighten after the first heat cycle.
• Brass exhaust nuts come off far easier next time than plated steel nuts.

• Will these fit my 1970 VW Beetle? Yes. They fit the exhaust ports of 1200–1600cc upright Type 1 engines with a 1-1/2 in. header or heat exchanger flange, which covers a stock 1970 Beetle.
• Do they fit a 1-5/8 in. performance header? No. These are 1-1/2 in. I.D. For 1-5/8 in. headers use a 1-5/8 in. gasket such as EMPI 00-3632-0 (steel) or 17-2821-0 (copper).
• How many do I need? One pack of 4 does a complete Type 1 engine: one gasket per exhaust port.
• Paper, steel or copper? This is EMPI's standard die-cut port gasket. EMPI also makes steel (00-3631-0) and copper (17-2820-0) versions, which some builders prefer on hot-running or high-performance engines.
• Do they fit a Type 4 engine or a 1972-79 Bus? NOT CONFIRMED. Buses with the Type 4 engine (1.7-2.0L) use a different port gasket. Check before you order.
• What is the part number? EMPI 00-3391-0 (short number 3391). The single gasket is 00-3391-7. UPC 707924321531.
