EMPI Super Shroud — Doghouse, With Heater | Semi-Gloss Black (00-8678-0)
Fits doghouse engines — 1971 and later — and keeps your heat. Open your engine lid: if there's a rectangular oil cooler box hanging off the outside of the shroud on the driver's side, you have a doghouse and this is your shroud. If the cooler stands upright inside the shroud, you need the upright version (00-8684-0 with heater, 00-8679-0 without) instead.
Engine cooling isn't just about moving air — it's about moving it to the right places. The EMPI Super Shroud is the result of extensive CAD modeling, 3D scanning, and real-world flow testing. This version has the doghouse oil-cooler tower and heater duct outlets, so your heater boxes still work.
Traditional and aftermarket shrouds are often imbalanced, sending more air to the passenger side (cylinders 1 & 2) while the driver side (cylinders 3 & 4) runs hot. EMPI engineers used Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to redesign the internal fins, correcting that imbalance for consistent temperatures across the whole motor.
Vehicle Fitment
Fits 1300cc–1600cc Type 1 engines set up for doghouse cooling, single-port or dual-port:
- VW Beetle & Super Beetle: 1971–1979
- VW Bus (Type 2): 1971 only — the last year the US Bus came with the Type 1 doghouse engine
- VW Karmann Ghia: 1971–1974
- VW Thing (Type 181): 1973–1974
- Engine cases: fits both OEM and "bubbletop" cases without modification
What it will not fit. An upright (pre-1971) engine, a Type 3 pancake, or a Type 4. The Type 3 and Type 4 hang their cooling fan off the end of the crankshaft instead of the generator, and their shrouds are a different part altogether — no Type 1 shroud will go on either one. That also means a 1972-and-later US Bus is out: it left the factory with a Type 4 engine and its own fan housing.
A note on the name. These are sold as "36HP style." That describes the early 36-horse shape of the shroud — the look — not the engine it bolts to. EMPI copied the early styling and built it to fit 1300–1600cc Type 1 engines.

- How do I know I have a doghouse? Open the engine lid. A rectangular oil cooler box on the outside of the shroud, driver's side, means doghouse — 1971 and later. - What fan does it take? A stock 28–30mm fan or a high-output 37mm fan. It accepts either without modification.
