The genuine Weber brass float, part 41015.007 — item 15 in the Weber IDA exploded view — is the fuel-level float for downdraft Weber IDA carburetors. This is the original soldered-brass design, not a reproduction and not an aftermarket copy: factory Weber stock sourced through REDLINE, the authorized North American Weber distributor, and shipped from their California warehouse. Rebuilding a Weber 48 IDA on an air-cooled VW, or a pair of 40/46 IDA 3C triples on an early Porsche 911? This is the correct float.

Brass floats have quietly become the hard part of an IDA rebuild. Most of what is offered today is either the later plastic (Spansil) float that replaced brass in Spanish production, or an aftermarket brass copy made outside the Weber supply chain. The genuine brass floats that do surface are typically overseas listings with two-week transit and international shipping charges that exceed the part. This one ships from the United States.

How many floats do I need?

This is the most common ordering mistake on IDA carburetors. The 2-barrel and 3-barrel bodies use the same float — but not the same quantity.

Carburetor Floats required
Weber 48 IDA (2-barrel) 1 per carburetor
Weber 40 IDA 3C / 46 IDA 3C (3-barrel) 2 per carburetor
Porsche 911 — matched pair of 3-barrel carbs 4 total
VW Type 1 — dual 48 IDA setup 2 total

Sold individually, or as a 2-pack and a 4-pack so you can order a complete carburetor or a complete car in one go.

Fitment — this part fits the carburetor, not the car

Confirmed carburetor fitment: Weber 48 IDA (2-barrel) and Weber 40 IDA 3C / 46 IDA 3C (3-barrel). Weber's own parts breakdowns also list this float across the wider 3-barrel family — IDA, IDAP, IDL, IDTP, IDS, IDT and IF series.

Vehicles commonly running these carburetors:

  • Porsche 911 — factory Weber 40 IDA 3C induction, roughly February 1966 through 1972, before mechanical fuel injection took over.
  • Porsche 914/6 and other 3-barrel IDA-series applications.
  • Air-cooled VW — Beetle, Super Beetle, Karmann Ghia, Bus, Type 3, Type 4, Thing and buggy builds running dual 48 IDA.
  • Porsche 356 and 912 performance builds converted to 48 IDA.
  • Small-block Ford and other V8 induction — 4x 48 IDA setups.
  • Mazda rotary — 12A and 13B engines running 48 IDA downdrafts.

Verify before ordering: confirm the model stamped on your carburetor body and count your float chambers. If your set currently runs plastic floats, see the note on mixing materials below.

Features

  • Genuine Weber — factory part 41015.007, supplied through REDLINE, the authorized North American Weber distributor. Not an aftermarket copy and not an Italian reproduction.
  • Soldered brass construction — the original specification, and the correct material for a period-correct restoration.
  • One float, two carburetor families — the same part serves the 2-barrel 48 IDA and the 3-barrel 40/46 IDA 3C.
  • In stock in California — no international transit, no import fees, no multi-week wait.
  • Correct weight for the IDA needle valve — a matched float and needle valve are what hold a stable fuel level; a mismatched float is the usual cause of flooding or high-rpm starvation.

Specifications

  • Weber part number: 41015.007 (supplied as 41015.007B, brass)
  • Also catalogued as: PMO PM-O165-0 — the same float under a different supplier's number
  • Exploded-view reference: item 15, Weber IDA parts breakdown
  • Material: Brass, soldered disc body with a saddle channel and integral pivot tang
  • Brand: Weber, via REDLINE (authorized North American distributor)
  • Condition: New
  • Sold as: single float, 2-pack, or 4-pack (select above)
  • Companion part — IDA needle valve: Weber 79504 series (48 IDA commonly 2.00 mm, part 79504.200)

Float level reference

Published Weber IDA float-leveling figures, measured with the top cover held vertical and the float resting lightly on the closed needle valve:

Carburetor Closed (dimension A) Float drop
40 & 46 IDA 3C (3-barrel) 18 mm 12.5–13 mm
48 IDA (2-barrel) 24 mm 5.5–6 mm

Float level specifications vary by application — always confirm against the calibration for your specific carburetor before final assembly.

Installation notes

  • 3-barrel carburetors: to run this float in a 40 or 46 IDA 3C, the stop tab must be removed. In a 48 IDA it fits as supplied.
  • Never mix brass and plastic floats within one carburetor or one matched set. The two materials do not weigh the same, so the fuel levels will not match and the carburetors cannot be balanced.
  • Adjust at the tang, not the arm. Bend the tabs until they sit perpendicular to the pivot axis, and inspect the tang face for indentations that can bind the needle.
  • Replace the needle valve and the top-cover gasket at the same time. A new float against a worn needle will not hold a level.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is this a genuine Weber part? Yes. Weber part number 41015.007, supplied through REDLINE, the authorized North American Weber distributor. It is not an aftermarket copy and not one of the Italian artisan reproductions currently sold in its place.
  • Is this the same as PMO PM-O165-0? Yes — same float, different supplier's part number. PMO catalogues this Weber float under their own number. If you have been quoted PM-O165-0, this is that part.
  • Brass or plastic? Brass — the original material. Weber later introduced a plastic (Spansil) float under the same base part number for Spanish production. Both work, but they do not weigh the same, so never mix them within one carburetor set.
  • Which is better, brass or plastic? Brass is correct for a period-correct restoration and is what the carburetor was designed around. Plastic floats cannot develop a pinhole leak and sink, which is the one failure mode brass has. Builders run both successfully — what matters is that every float in your set is the same material.
  • How do I know my float has failed? A leaking brass float takes on fuel, sits low, and holds the needle valve open — you get flooding, fuel smell, a rich idle, and fuel weeping from the air horns. Shake it: if you hear liquid inside, it is done.
  • How many do I need for my Porsche 911? Four. Each 40 or 46 IDA 3C carburetor has two float chambers, and a 911 runs a matched pair of carburetors. Order the 4-pack.
  • How many for a dual 48 IDA VW? Two — one per carburetor. Order the 2-pack.
  • Does it fit the 40 IDA 3C as supplied? Not quite — the stop tab must be removed for 3-barrel use. It fits the 48 IDA as supplied.
  • Will this work in an EMPI EPC 48 or another IDA clone? The EPC 48 and similar IDA-style clones use their own float part numbers. Check your carburetor's parts breakdown before ordering; this listing is for genuine Weber IDA bodies.
  • What float level should I set? 18 mm closed with a 12.5–13 mm drop on the 3-barrel 40/46 IDA 3C; 24 mm closed with a 5.5–6 mm drop on the 2-barrel 48 IDA. Confirm against your carburetor's calibration.
  • Does it come with a needle valve or gasket? No — float only. The IDA needle valve is Weber's 79504 series; the 48 IDA commonly uses the 2.00 mm valve, part 79504.200.
  • What other carburetors use this float? Weber's 3-barrel parts breakdowns list it across the IDA, IDAP, IDL, IDTP, IDS, IDT and IF families in addition to the 48 IDA.
  • Where does it ship from? The United States. Most competing genuine brass floats ship from Italy, the Netherlands or the Czech Republic with long transit and import charges.
  • What is the part number I should search for? 41015.007 — also written 41015.007B for the brass version, 41015007, WEB-41015-007, and PMO PM-O165-0.
