Short answer: JP Group JP-3130-0 is the 2-terminal back-up (reverse) light switch, OE 084 941 521 (JP ref 1196600200). What's Included
- One back-up light switch
Not Included
- Sealing washer (reuse yours if it is in good shape, or fit a new one)
- Wiring connectors or harness
- Reverse light bulbs
Why It Matters
On the 924 and 944, the reverse lights are switched by a small plunger switch on the transaxle at the back of the car. It lives in a hot, dirty spot, and after 30-plus years the contacts wear or the plunger sticks. Common symptoms include reverse lights that never come on, lights that come on only sometimes or only after a few tries, lights that stay on all the time, or a reverse light fuse that keeps blowing because of a shorted switch. Working reverse lights are required for inspection in many states, and they help other drivers see you backing up. If the bulbs, fuse and wiring check out, this inexpensive switch is the usual cause. Testing is easy: unplug the two wires, bridge them, and if the lights come on with the ignition on, the switch is bad.
Installation Notes
- Raise the car safely on stands. The switch is on the transaxle at the rear of the car.
- Disconnect the battery, then pull the two spade connectors off the switch.
- Unscrew the old switch. A little gear oil may seep out, so have a rag ready.
- Fit the new switch with a good sealing washer and snug it down. Do not over-tighten into the aluminum case.
- Reconnect the wires (the polarity does not matter on a 2-terminal switch), select reverse, and check the lights.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it fit my 1986 944 with a 5-speed?
Yes. EMPI lists the 1983–1991 944 with manual transmission.
Does it fit a 924S or 944 Turbo?
Yes, on manual cars. They use the same 084 941 521 switch.
Is this the same as OE 084 941 521?
Yes. JP Group cross-references JP-3130-0 to 084 941 521.
My reverse lights don't work. Is it the switch?
Check the bulbs and fuse first. Then unplug the switch and bridge the two wires with the ignition on. If the lights come on, the switch is bad.
Does it fit an automatic?
No. Automatic 924 and 944 cars use a different switch.
What else do I need?
Usually nothing. A new sealing washer is a good idea, and check the gearbox oil level when you are done.
Is it new?
Yes, new JP Group.
