Why It Matters
A split boot lets water and grit into the ball joint. The joint then wears quickly and starts to clunk, and steering gets loose.
A boot is cheap. If the joint is still tight, a new boot keeps it alive much longer.
JP Group is a Danish maker of replacement parts for classic Volkswagens and Porsches. Its parts are sold under the JP Group, Dansk and Classic names, and EMPI is its US distributor. Washburn's Metal in Orange, California lists each JP part with its VW or Porsche OE number and its JP Group reference, so you can check it against your old part, your parts book or the stamp on the original before you order. If you are not sure whether this part fits your car, send us your year, model, chassis number and engine code and we will check it for you before it ships.
Installation Notes
- Check the ball joint for play first.
- Pack the new boot with grease.
- Seat the boot fully and fit its ring.
- Check the boot as the suspension moves through its travel.
Use the torque values and procedures in a factory or Bentley service manual for your car.
