JP Group Bosch 009-Style Distributor, Centrifugal Advance — VW Type 1 Engine (JP-8703-0)
Short answer: JP-8703-0 is JP Group's economy copy of the Bosch 009 distributor: a mechanical (centrifugal) advance points distributor with no vacuum can, for the air-cooled VW Type 1 engine in the Beetle, Karmann Ghia, Bus and Type 3. EMPI says it idles near 0 degrees, advances to about 40 degrees, and works on 6 V or 12 V. Ref AC999009 / Bosch 0 231 178 009, JP ref 8191100506.

Why It Matters
The 009 became the standard swap on Type 1 engines because it is simple: no vacuum diaphragm to tear and no hoses to route. A worn original distributor with a sloppy shaft wanders the timing and makes the dwell jump, which causes rough idle, misfires and poor fuel economy. This economy unit is an affordable way to replace a tired or seized distributor. Be aware the 009 can give a flat spot off idle on stock single-carb engines because it has no vacuum advance, which is why many builders prefer it with dual carbs or a performance curve. A genuine Bosch or SVDA distributor is the choice for a stock, concours-correct engine.
Installation Notes
- Set the engine to TDC on cylinder 1 and note the rotor position before removing the old distributor.
- Check the drive gear spacer spring is in place in the pedestal.
- Set the points gap or dwell and check the cap and rotor fit before final timing.
- Set total advance with a timing light at the RPM in your workshop manual, not just static timing.
- If you add an electronic points replacement, make sure it is the version for a 009.
