JP Group Brake Shoe Set, 250 x 46 mm — VW Super Beetle Front & Type 3 Rear (JP-8686-0)

Short answer: JP-8686-0 is a set of four 250 x 46 mm drum brake shoes, enough for one axle (two wheels). This wide shoe is used on the front drums of the 1971–1979 VW Super Beetle (1302/1303) and on the rear drums of the 1966–1973 Type 3. It replaces VW OE 311 698 537 E, JP Group ref 8163800510.

Why It Matters

Worn or glazed brake shoes give a long pedal, poor stopping, pulling to one side and, once the lining is gone, metal-on-metal grinding that ruins the drums. Shoes contaminated by a leaking wheel cylinder or hub seal will never brake evenly again, even after cleaning. The Super Beetle front drum and the Type 3 rear drum both use this wider 250 x 46 mm shoe, and fitting a narrower shoe in these drums gives weaker braking. Replace shoes in axle sets so both sides grip the same.

Installation Notes

  • Measure the drum inside diameter and check it is within the wear limit in your workshop manual; turn or replace drums as needed.
  • Replace the return springs and hold-down hardware if they are weak or rusty.
  • Clean the backing plate contact points and add a dab of high-temperature brake grease.
  • Keep grease and brake fluid off the linings.
  • Adjust the shoes, bleed if you replaced a wheel cylinder, and bed in the shoes with several moderate stops.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it fit my 1974 Super Beetle?
Yes, on the front drum brakes.

Does it fit my 1970 standard Beetle front?
Not confirmed. Standard Beetles normally use a narrower 230 x 40 mm front shoe. Measure before ordering.

Is this the same as OE 311 698 537 E?
Yes. JP Group cross-references JP-8686-0 to 311 698 537 E.

Is this front or rear?
Both, depending on the car: front on a Super Beetle, rear on a Type 3. EMPI's title says rear and its fitment says front for that reason.

How many shoes come in the set?
Four, enough for both wheels on one axle.

What else do I need?
A shoe hardware kit, and wheel cylinders or drums if they are worn or leaking.
