Why It Matters
The 1975 and later Beetle bumpers carry a rubber impact strip that is held on by a row of these clips. The originals are now more than forty years old. They rust, go brittle and snap when the strip is pulled off, and a strip held by too few clips lifts at the ends, flaps at speed and lets water sit against the bumper, which rusts it from behind.
Fitting a new impact strip or a rechromed or repainted bumper is the time to fit new clips in every hole. They cost very little and make the strip sit tight and straight, the way it left the factory.
JP Group is a Danish maker of replacement parts for classic Volkswagens and Porsches. Its parts are sold under the JP Group, Dansk and Classic names, and EMPI is its US distributor. Washburn's Metal in Orange, California lists each JP part with its VW or Porsche OE number and its JP Group reference, so you can check it against your old part, your parts book or the stamp on the original before you order. If you are not sure whether this part fits your car, send us your year, model and chassis number and we will check it for you before it ships.
Installation Notes
- Pull the impact strip off slowly from one end; old clips usually break, so plan to replace all of them.
- Clean the clip holes in the bumper and remove rust before fitting new clips.
- Fit the clips into the bumper the same way the originals were installed, then line the strip up and press it home from one end.
- A little soapy water helps the rubber slide over the clips.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this fit my 1977 Beetle?
Yes. EMPI lists the 1975–1979 Beetle, front and rear bumpers.
Does it fit my 1973 Super Beetle?
No. 1973–1974 bumpers have no rubber impact strip, so they do not use this clip.
Is this the same as OE 171 807 249 A?
Yes. EMPI lists JP-8487-0 against OE 171 807 249 A.
How many do I need?
One per hole in the bumper. Count the holes in yours and add a couple of spares. They are sold each.
Does it fit my Vanagon?
EMPI lists 1980–1987 Vanagons. Some Vanagons use the press-in clip 251 807 249 (JP-1334-0), so compare with your old clip.
Is it new?
Yes, new JP Group.
