What's Included / Not Included
- Included: One brake drum (front or rear, per the option you choose).
- Not included: Brake shoes, wheel cylinders, hardware, wheel bearings, seals or axle nut.
Why It Matters
Drums worn past their maximum diameter, scored, cracked or out of round give a pulsing pedal, weak and uneven braking, noise and poor handbrake hold. On an early Bus the brakes are already small for the weight of the van, so good drums matter. Front drums on 1964–1970 Buses also carry the wheel bearings, and the hub seal size changed during production; check which seal your drum uses. Wide-five drums are getting harder to find in good used condition.
Installation Notes
- Choose the correct option: front (JP-8322-0) or rear (JP-8324-0).
- Front drums contain the wheel bearings: fit new bearings and the correct hub seal, pack with grease and adjust bearing play per the workshop manual.
- Clean the protective coating off the braking surface with brake cleaner.
- Replace drums in pairs with new shoes, and check wheel cylinders and hardware.
- Tighten the rear axle nut and lug bolts to factory specification and fit a new cotter pin; adjust shoes and handbrake, then bed the brakes in gently.
- We do not publish torque values here; use the factory workshop manual for your vehicle.
