What's Included / Not Included
- Included: one step rubber for the side you select.
- Not included: the opposite side, step repair metal, adhesive or clips.
Why It Matters
Every time you climb into a Vanagon cab you stand on the entry step rubber. After decades of boots, sun and water the original rubber shrinks, cracks, tears at the edges and comes loose. Water then sits under the loose rubber against the steel step, which is one of the most common rust spots on a Vanagon.
A new step rubber gives a safe, grippy foothold, keeps water off the step metal and makes the cab entry look right again. It is one of the cheapest ways to make a tired Vanagon look cared for.
If you find rust under the old rubber, repair the step metal before fitting the new one. Covering rust with new rubber only hides it.
Installation Notes
- Peel out the old rubber and clean the step completely. Remove old adhesive and treat any surface rust.
- Test-fit the new rubber. Warm it in the sun or with a hair dryer to make it flexible.
- Use a weather-strip or contact adhesive suitable for rubber to steel if the old one was glued.
- Press it down from the center outward so no air or water pockets are left underneath.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it fit my 1985 Vanagon Westfalia?
Yes. EMPI lists it for 1983–1991 Vanagons, which includes Westfalias.
Left or right — how do I tell?
Left is the driver side on a US van (JP-8409-0). Right is the passenger side (JP-8410-0).
Is it the same as VW 251 863 735 / 736?
Yes. EMPI lists 251 863 735 for the left and 251 863 736 for the right. The VW parts are discontinued.
Does it fit a Syncro?
The VW number lists the Vanagon Syncro, so it should fit. EMPI does not list Syncro separately.
Will it fit my 1981 Vanagon?
Not confirmed. The VW number covers 1980 on, but EMPI lists 1983–1991. Compare with your old rubber.
What else do I need?
Rubber-to-metal adhesive if yours was glued, and rust treatment for the step underneath.
Is it new?
Yes, new JP Group rubber.
