  • One center shift rod

Not Included

  • Shift rod bushings (front, center and rear)
  • Front shift rod, rear rod, U-joint and clamp hardware
  • Shifter base and shift lever

Why It Matters

The Vanagon has one of the longest shift linkages of any VW: from the shifter at the driver's seat to the transaxle at the very back. Any play or bend along the way multiplies at the lever. A bent or rusted center rod, or one whose joints have worn, gives vague shifting, difficulty finding reverse or first, gears that pop out, and a lever that wanders. Replacing worn rods and the bushings together is how you get back the tight shift Vanagons had when new.

Installation Notes

  • Mark the position of each joint and clamp before you disassemble so the shift pattern stays centered.
  • Replace the plastic shift rod bushings while the linkage is apart.
  • Grease all bushings and joints with a light film of grease.
  • Adjust the linkage at the transaxle end following the procedure in your workshop manual, then check every gear including reverse.

Before You Order

Sloppy Vanagon shifting is not always the rod. Before buying, get under the van with a helper moving the shift lever and watch the linkage. If the rod itself is straight but moves inside worn bushings, new bushings may be all you need. If the rod is visibly bent, rusted through, or its joint is loose on the rod, replace the rod. Also check the shift lever base and the U-joint at the transaxle, which are common wear points. Fixing every worn joint at once gives the best result.
