Why It Matters
Chrome valve covers are one of the classic dress-up parts on an air-cooled VW, and they show at every car show. Old covers get dented by jacks and road debris. A dented cover can touch a rocker arm, and a bent lip will leak oil onto the heater boxes and exhaust.
A new set that is straight gives a clean gasket seal. It also suits a fresh engine better than old, pitted chrome.
Installation Notes
- Use new gaskets every time the covers come off.
- Clean the sealing surface on the head before you fit the cover.
- Check the cover does not touch the rocker arms or adjusting screws, especially with high-ratio rockers.
- Snap the bail clips over the cover so they sit in the center groove.
- Run the engine and check for oil leaks once it is hot.
- We do not publish torque values here; use the factory workshop manual (Bentley) for your vehicle.
