What's Included / Not Included
- Included: stock-style muffler, tail pipes and the mounting kit (clamps and seals), per EMPI.
- Not included: heat exchangers or heater boxes, J-tubes, cylinder-head exhaust gaskets, nuts. Replace the port gaskets whenever you drop the exhaust.
Why It Matters
A rusted-through muffler is loud, but the bigger problem is fumes. On an air-cooled VW the heater draws air across the exhaust, so a leaking muffler or a blown preheat tube can send exhaust gas into the cabin. Old mufflers also crack at the tail pipe stubs and the heat-riser connections, which makes the engine run cold in winter. A complete kit puts in new pipes, seals and clamps at the same time, so there are no old, rusted joints left to leak.
Installation Notes
- Soak the old nuts with penetrating oil the day before. Broken exhaust studs are the usual headache.
- Fit new cylinder-head and heat-riser gaskets and hang the muffler loosely first. Then tighten from the heads back.
- Set the tail pipes level and evenly spaced before you tighten the clamps.
- Run the engine and check for leaks and rattles. Recheck the clamps after the first heat cycles.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which one fits my 1972 Beetle?
JP-8173-0, the 1300–1600cc kit. But a US 1972–1974 car with an EGR valve may need the EGR muffler instead, so check whether your engine has an EGR pipe.
Which one fits my 1964 Beetle?
JP-8172-0, for the 1200cc 40 hp engine.
Does it fit a 1977 fuel-injected Beetle?
Not confirmed. US 1975–1979 fuel-injected cars use a single-outlet muffler and a catalytic converter on many models.
Is it the same as the Heritage or Mid America extra-value kits?
Similar idea, different maker. This is the JP Group kit with EMPI refs VW-35020Z and VW-35021Z.
Does it include heater boxes?
No. It is the muffler, tail pipes and mounting kit.
Is it loud?
No. It is a stock-pattern, E/TÜV-approved muffler with factory sound level.
Is it new?
Yes. It is a new kit.
