What's Included / Not Included
- Included: OE-style muffler, tail pipe and the mounting kit.
- Not included: heat exchangers, cylinder-head gaskets, exhaust nuts, catalytic converter or EGR parts.
Why It Matters
A Bus muffler sits low and takes road salt, water and heat. Once it rusts through, the Bus gets loud and loses heat. More importantly, exhaust can get into the heater air and the cabin through cracked joints or a split heat-riser. Replacing the muffler, tail pipe and every clamp and seal together removes all the old leak points in one job. It also stops a half-rusted tail pipe from snapping off the new muffler a year later.
Installation Notes
- Soak the exhaust nuts with penetrating oil ahead of time and use new gaskets at the heads and heat exchangers.
- Hang the muffler loosely, start every nut, then tighten from the heads rearward so nothing is pre-loaded.
- Align the tail pipe to clear the rear valance and bumper before you tighten its clamp.
- Check for leaks with the engine running and recheck the clamps after a few heat cycles.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which kit fits my 1970 Bus?
JP-8176-0, for the 1963–1971 Bus with the 1500/1600 Type 1 engine.
Which kit fits my 1976 Bus?
A 1976 Bus has the 2.0 Type 4 engine, so JP-8175-0. US cars with a catalytic converter use extra pipes, so compare with what is on your Bus.
How do I tell Type 1 from Type 4?
The Type 1 engine has an upright fan shroud with the generator or alternator on top. The Type 4 has a flat "pancake" fan on the front of the crankshaft.
Is JP-8175-0 the same as OE 021 251 053 D?
EMPI lists 021 251 053 D as its OE reference. That is the Type 4 muffler number; the kit adds the tail pipe and mounting kit.
Does it include heat exchangers?
No.
Is it louder than stock?
No. It is OE style and E/TÜV approved.
Is it new?
Yes. It is a new kit.
